Black Out Text in a PDF

Covering text with a black box does not remove it — the words are still in the file and can be copied straight out. This tool deletes them properly: matching pages are re-drawn with the sensitive areas filled in solid black.

How to use it

Add the PDF

Drop the document above or click to browse. It needs a text layer to search — a scan has none, so run OCR PDF first if selecting text in your viewer does nothing.

List what to hide

Type the words or phrases that must go, separated by commas. Matching ignores capitals, so one entry covers every spelling of the same name.

Run the tool

Each match is located on the page, and every page that contains one is re-drawn with those areas filled in solid black.

Check the result

Open the downloaded PDF and look at the blacked-out areas. Confirm nothing you meant to keep has been caught — a short entry can match inside a longer word, so use the longest phrase that is still exact.

Share with confidence

Because the pages were re-drawn, the hidden words are no longer part of the file. Select the area, or run PDF to Text on the result, and nothing should come back for them.

Common issues

A word you wanted to keep turned black

The search is literal. If you entered "Smith" and the document also contains "Smithfield", both are caught. Go back to the original and run it again with a longer, more specific phrase.

The redacted page looks softer than the rest

Pages containing a match are re-drawn as images, so they can look slightly different from the untouched vector pages and add to the file size. That is the price of truly removing the text rather than covering it.

Nothing was found in a scanned document

A scan has no text layer, so there is nothing to match. Run OCR PDF first to add one, then redact the searchable copy.

Copied text still shows a word you hid

Check the page you are looking at — only matching pages are re-drawn. If a sensitive word on an untouched page was missed, add it to the list and run again.

Frequently asked questions

Does a black box really hide the text?
Only when the page is rebuilt. Drawing a rectangle over text leaves the words underneath, and anyone can select, copy or extract them. This tool re-draws the whole page as an image with the areas filled in, so the original text no longer exists in the file.
Which pages are affected?
Only the pages that actually contain a match. Pages without one keep their original vector content, so their text stays selectable and the file stays as small as it can be.
Will the redacted pages still be searchable?
No. A re-drawn page is an image, so its text layer is gone. If the rest of the document needs to stay searchable, run OCR PDF on the result afterwards — a solid black area cannot be read back, so the hidden words stay hidden.
Is the search case sensitive?
No. Matching ignores capitals, so a single entry covers "John Smith", "JOHN SMITH" and "john smith" alike.
Can I hide a whole paragraph at once?
Not as one block. Listing the individual words, or a distinctive phrase that appears in it, is the practical route. For a large region, cover it in a PDF editor instead.
Why did it match inside another word?
Matching is a straight text search. A short entry such as "Ann" will also hit "Announcement". Enter a longer, more distinctive phrase to narrow it down.
Does it work on a scanned PDF?
Not directly. A scan has no text to search, so nothing can be matched. Run OCR PDF first to add a text layer, then redact the searchable copy.
Is anything uploaded to a server?
No. The document is analysed and rebuilt entirely in your browser, and the result is created on your own device.
Can I undo a redaction afterwards?
Not in the output — that is the whole point. The original file on your computer is never modified, so keep it if you might still need the untouched version.
