Convert PDF to Markdown

A PDF stores text as positioned fragments, not as headings and lists. This tool reads those fragments, works out which lines are titles from their size, and rebuilds a clean Markdown file.

How to use it

Add the PDF

Drop the document above or click to browse. Use a file that has a real text layer — if selecting text in your viewer does nothing, the file is a scan and needs OCR PDF first.

Let it read the layout

Each page is analysed: text is grouped into lines, and the size of every line is compared with the body text to decide heading levels.

Check the headings

Open the .md file and skim the headings. A cover title, a figure caption or a pull quote can be promoted to a heading by mistake, so a quick tidy is worth the few seconds.

Tidy the lists

Bullets and numbered lines become Markdown lists. If a list runs straight into a paragraph, add a blank line so the list ends where you want it to.

Use the file

Drop the .md file into your notes app, a static site generator or an AI assistant. Markdown is plain text, so it stays readable and easy to compare.

Common issues

Every line came out as a heading

If a document uses one large type size throughout — a slide handout, a poster, a one-page flyer — most lines look larger than body text and get promoted. The words are still correct; just delete the hashes you do not want.

A cover page collapses into one big heading

Title pages have few lines and unusually large type, so the whole page can turn into one or two headings. That is expected, and it takes a moment to fix once the file is open.

Hyphenated words stay split across lines

PDFs often break a word at the end of a line with a hyphen. The tool will not guess whether the hyphen belongs to the word, so you may see "docu-" followed by "ment" and need to rejoin it.

The text looks like one long paragraph

Markdown needs a blank line between blocks. The paragraphs are separate in the file — check in a plain-text editor if your preview seems to run them together.

Frequently asked questions

What is Markdown, and why convert to it?
Markdown is plain text with a few light conventions — # for headings, - for bullets. It reads well as-is, renders neatly on code hosts and in note apps, and is a natural format for feeding a document to an AI assistant.
How are headings decided?
From font size. The most common text size on the page is treated as the body, and lines noticeably larger than that become headings — the bigger the jump, the higher the level. It is a guess based on layout, not information stored in the file.
Will my tables come out as Markdown tables?
Not currently. Table rows are read as ordinary lines of text, so the columns run together. Rebuilding a table needs the cell grid to be recognised, which this tool does not yet attempt.
My PDF is a scan — can it be converted?
Only after OCR. A scanned page has no text layer at all, so there is nothing to read. Run OCR PDF first to add a hidden text layer, then convert the searchable PDF here.
Why do two columns sometimes merge?
PDFs store text in the order it was drawn, not the order you read it. On a two-column page the lines can end up interleaved. The words are all present, but you may need to rearrange them by hand.
Are images and links included?
No. The output is text only. Images are skipped, and a link is kept as its visible label without the underlying address, because the target URL is not part of the text layer.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The whole conversion runs in your browser and the .md file is created on your own device.
How does this differ from PDF to Text?
PDF to Text gives you the raw words with no structure. This tool additionally uses the position and size of each line to rebuild headings and lists, so the result is ready to read and edit rather than a wall of text.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF?
No. An encrypted file must be unlocked first — remove the password in your viewer or with Unlock PDF, then convert the unlocked copy.
