Split PDF Files

Pull out the pages you need, or break one document into several. Type the ranges and each one becomes its own downloadable PDF.

How to use it

Add the PDF

Drop the document onto the box above, or click to browse. A single file is split at a time, which keeps the page numbering unambiguous.

Find your page numbers

Open the PDF and note the pages you need. The tool shows how many pages the file contains, so you can check you are not asking for a page that does not exist.

Describe the ranges

Type one or more ranges separated by commas. "1-3, 5" produces a three-page file and a one-page file. The order you type is the order you get back.

Split and check

Press Split PDF. Each range appears as its own row with its page count and file size, so you can confirm the split before downloading.

Download the parts

Save each file with its own button, or use the button that fetches every part in one go. The original document is left untouched.

Common issues

"That page is out of range"

One of your ranges names a page the document does not have. Page numbers start at 1, not 0, and the tool refuses to guess, so retype the range and run it again.

A range written backwards produces nothing

Ranges must run from a lower number to a higher one. To get pages 5 then 3 in that order, list them as two separate ranges: "5, 3".

The number printed on the page does not match the range

In many documents the printed page number differs from the file page number, because a cover or contents page is counted but not numbered. If a range returns unexpected content, count pages from the start of the file instead of trusting the numbers printed on them.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a PDF into single pages?
Enter a range for every page, for example "1, 2, 3, 4". Each number becomes its own one-page PDF.
Are the original pages changed?
No. Pages are copied into the new documents exactly as they are, so text, links and image quality are preserved.
Can I split a PDF by bookmarks?
Not currently. This tool splits by page ranges. Bookmark-based splitting needs the document outline to be parsed and is on our list.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
No. Encrypted files must be unlocked before their pages can be read. Remove the password in your PDF viewer and save an unlocked copy first.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. The whole split happens in your browser, and the resulting files are created in memory on your device.
What happens if I ask for a page that does not exist?
The range is rejected with a message naming the page. Nothing is produced for that range, so correct the number and run it again. This is deliberate: silently skipping a missing page would give you a file that is not what you asked for.
Can the same page appear in two files?
Yes. List a page in more than one range, for example "1-3, 3-6". Page 3 then appears at the end of the first file and at the start of the second.
Do bookmarks and form fields survive the split?
Page content and links are copied, but document-level features such as bookmarks and interactive form fields are not carried over, because they belong to the whole document rather than to one page.
How large a PDF can I split?
There is no fixed limit. Processing happens in your browser, so the ceiling is the memory your device can give the tab. Documents of a few hundred pages split without trouble on an ordinary computer.
