The illusion of thought is strong because the outputs are so coherent. Ask it to write a poem about loneliness, and it'll produce something that tugs at your heartstrings. But it's not expressing an emotion. It's assembling words statistically associated with loneliness from all the poetry and Reddit posts in its training data. This matters because we tend to anthropomorphize things that sound human. People have started treating chatbots as therapists or friends, which can be genuinely risky. The bot isn't listening. It's generating. There's a big difference between simulating empathy and actually caring about you.
